Mustache Transplant
In the absence of upper lip hair growth in men possibly caused by various traumas and injuries, autoimmune diseases, skin diseases, or low testosterone levels the definitive solution is mustache transplant. Mustache transplant is the transplant of hair follicles to the upper lip area.
The follicles that are planted in lieu of mustache are harvested from the back of the neck like in hair transplant. Planted follicles continue to function as hair and may grow quickly. As a result patients may have to trim and shave their mustache before letting it grow too long.
The density of the plantation must allow for follicle nutrition. When planted follicles start to grow 4-6 months later the operation may be repeated, depending on sparse mustache areas. Preexisting marks or scars on the upper lip may be covered by mustache transplants.
FUE method is used for mustache transplants. No marks or scars are left in the donor and receiving areas. The patient determines the limits and density of the transplant.
