Endodontics (Root Canal Treatment)

Endodontics or root canal treatment is the process of collecting the nerve tissues in the center of the tooth one by one when tooth decay occurs. The damaged tooth tissue is cleaned by endodontics.

In which cases you can make  root canal treatment?

Endodontics method is recommended by the doctor in the following cases:

  • Dental caries
  • Fractured teeth
  • Bridge and denture
  • And deep tooth caries.

How is the root treatment done?

• Once the condition of the tooth is determined by your dentist and root canal treatment is recommended, the treatment is started by an endodontist and it takes in one or more sessions according to the condition of the tooth.

• First of all, local anesthesia is applied to the area to be treated so that you do not experience any pain, and after cleaning any existing caries, the tooth is opened from the dental crown section to reach the region where the nerves are.

• Radiography (X-ray) is taken to determine the canal length.

• The contents of the root canals are removed and the root canals are formed using various hand tools and rotating tools.

• Disinfection of the root canals of the bacteria is ensured and the channels are filled with a material that is compatible with the surrounding tissues.

• Treatment can take between 1–3 sessions depending on the condition of the tooth.

• Especially in cases where the tooth is not alive and there is inflammation at the root end, medication may be applied to the root canal in order to remove bacteria. For this drug to be effective, it needs to stay in the canals at least 5-7 days. During this time, the tooth is covered with a temporary filling material.

• In cases of severe inflammation, the dentist may recommend taking oral medication.

• After the treatment, mild tooth pain and tenderness may be seen, but this is temporary. In this case, the best solution is to not use the side of that tooth for a period of several days. After a short time, the sensitivity will disappear.

• A canal-treated tooth can serve for years such as a tooth that has never been treated. In teeth with root canal treatment caries or fractures such as any tooth may occur and these may be problematic for the gingiva. The patient should take good care of their oral hygiene after canal treatment.

• You should regularly brush your teeth, floss and check with your doctor.
